MANILA, Philippines -- Actress Eugene Domingo is returning to
her first love -- theater -- for the stage version of Lino Brocka's
critically acclaimed film "Bona," which starred Nora Aunor and Philip
Salvador.
"Theater is my first love and it's so refreshing to do it again. Masarap lagi na bumalik sa una mong pag-ibig," Domingo said In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com after the press conference for her upcoming film "Kimmy Dora and The Temple of Kyeme" on Monday.
"Hindi ko alam kung mangangapa (ako) but it's going to be directed by mother Soxy Topacio. It's going to be fun and we have enough time to rehearse. Mag-re-rehearse na ako sa July sa PETA theater mismo," she added.
Domingo also stressed that the stage version to be mounted by the Philippine Educational Theater Association or PETA would deviate from the movie.
"It's Bona ng makabagong panahon. It's really not the exact Bona. I mean the script is different it's going to be modernized," she said.
"Kahit sa anong generation naman there's a Bona in everybody. Bona means good and 'yung Bona naman doon sa film version is ina-idolize niya nakatutok siya sa character ni Phillip Salvador," Domingo explained.
"Bona," which was released in 1980, tells the story of a fan obsessed with a bit player, set in the slums of Manila.
For the stage version, Domingo will be working with actors Paolo Avelino and Edgar Allan Guzman.
Asked if she feels pressured in taking on an iconic Aunor character, Domingo replied: "Naku huwag niyo na po akong ikumpara, wala po akong ka-kwenta kwenta. Naka-trabaho ko na po si Ate Guy hindi ka matatakot sa kanya. Alam mo mas mapagbiro pa siya kaysa sa akin."
"Saka parang na-flatter ako na agad-agad ay binigyan niya ng permiso. So sinigurado ko talaga na hindi natin siya kokopyahin. Huwag na nating kopyahin kasi tatak na tatak na 'yon. Ibahin natin," Domingo said.
Aside from "Kimmy Dora and The Temple of Kyime," Domingo is also finishing the musical film "I Do Bidoo Bidoo."
Directed by Joyce Bernal, "Kimmy Dora and The Temple of Kyeme" will hit over 100 theaters on June 13.
