Yaya Meals? More like Yaya Musical! Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady hits the stage on May 7

There’s a little too much fun in the song “We Have a New Maid” in Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady. Then again, we suppose that finding help is cause for celebration—good people are hard to find. This is also why we’re stunned at the number of great people involved in this production.

Writer Carlo Vergara, director Chris Martinez, and musical director Vincent De Jesus teamed up with new company Dalanghita Productions and assembled a band of theater superheroes headed by Bituin Escalante, Frenchy Dy, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo—the likes of which we’ve never seen before…or we have, but in separate productions. Even Markki Stroem is joining in on the fun, alternating with Hans Eckstein as Leading Man.
During the press launch on April 13, Vergara described Leading Lady as a story of “what ifs.” What if there were superheroes in the Philippines? What if these superheroes needed to hire a maid? What if one of those superheroes fell in love with the maid?

Sounds like the plot for a Saturday morning soap and, fortunately, they were going for that flavor. It’s a nod to melodrama from the 1980s, although frankly, that’s a limiting description. We’re going to go with how Pertee Briñas and Ansis Aldrich Tan Sy, two-thirds of the main producers of the show, described it: “Flavorful. Fresh. Filipino.”

That’s the vision of Dalanghita Productions and, though small, they seem to know how to maximize their resources. They've taken a one-act play from Virgin Labfest 9 and found the perfect tune for it—both literally and figuratively, which had Bituin Escalante singing them high praises during the press launch. It bodes well for the show, because a happy crew does wonderful work. The energy of the cast—from lead to ensemble—feels strong enough to smash any obstacle and, through a few excerpts, they made us feel pretty excited.

We don’t want to spoil too much (for the benefit of the Leading Lady virgins), but Vergara’s script plays on the historically rooted elite tinge of the English language and the lukewarm response to the image of a macho gwapo Pinoy male. Among other things, of course.

There’s an inevitable comparison to Manhid, the recent superhero musical done by Ballet Philippines. It seems silly though, since one of them is a comedy and the other is not. The only thing of note is that they are both original Filipino stories and, judging by what we’ve seen, both are entertaining—and insightful.

MANILA, Philippines—Dalanghita Productions, in partnership with the Philippine Educational Theater Association (Peta), will be kickstarting its first season with “ Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady the Musical, ” from Carlo Vergara’s one-act play and graphic novel of the same title.

“Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady” revolves on the story of two sisters named Mely and Viva, who both yearn to fulfill their dreams.

Their sibling relationship and rivalry become more complicated due to an unsettled past and a budding romance, all in the context of an ongoing war between the superhero and supervillain teams.

Being a maid is tough enough, but when Mely lands a job under a group of superheroes, she steps up to the unique challenge for the sake of her family. The musical takes us through the journey of the characters as each tries to find his/her place in the world where superheroes and supervillains exist.

"I got teary-eyed during the show, not because of the dramatic scenes but because the musical somehow manages to encapsulate what's going on in our country right now. Contrary to what most articles have said about Rak of Aegis, it is not just about the Filipino people's resilience in the midst of calamities and our perpetual need to sing eardrum-splitting karaoke that can be heard barangay-wide. Rak of Aegis is everything Filipino, which includes our bad side. There's poverty. Corrupt, wealthy people who mistreat the weak and the less fortunate. The "I'll buy an expensive living room rug for show and so I could feel good about myself, but won't let guests at my house step on it" attitude. Our inclination toward get-rich-quick schemes, which in today's Facebook and YouTube age have been replaced by get-viral-and-hopefully-rich-thereafter-quick schemes. Our tendency to turn handicaps (e.g the flooding in the story) into emotional crutches (e.g. something we can milk for all it's got so we can earn money). And our penchant for looking toward the government for solutions, sometimes rightly so but more often than not incorrectly when we can be the solutions ourselves.

But yes, there's also a lot of good in the musical's being everything Filipino. Our creativity and resourcefulness. Our love for social media and music. Close family ties. Pride. Unity in times of desperate need, particularly when our community or country is being taken advantage of by someone from the outside. Our great sense of humor. The title itself—a pun on the hit Broadway musical Rock of Ages—shows our sharp wit and knack for copying or imitating stuff, which is not necessarily a bad thing because having been conquered many times, it is quite understandable for our country to be once in a while confused with its own identity...just as long as in the end we get back to being sure of who we are. Aside from the title pun, however, everything else about Rak of Aegis is original. I hope we could create more plays of this sort in the future."

(Aegis' surprise live performance at PETA's Rak of Aegis show. Video by Aaron Ching)

"Rak of Aegis is a valiant effort to bring people to the theater, and to enjoy something distinctly Filipino. With everyone, left and right, quoting Defying Gravity lyrics posted next to a green heart Emoji, here comes a musical less grand but with heart - a blue, red, and white one, with three stars and a bright, bright sun." - Juice.ph

"The actors alone give you a show to watch, and while you do look forward to the musical numbers a little too much, the play, as you will realize shortly after, can be described the way you would Aegis: brutally honest, extremely Pinoy, and best over beers..." - BroadwayWorld.com

"The Filipinos’ ability to laugh and sing even during the most difficult times is something that rings true not only in the play, but in real life as well." -Pep.ph

"When in Manila and you want to understand the Filipino spirit through music, there’s only one band to turn to: Aegis. And for the first time ever, the discography of one of the country’s biggest cultural phenomena will be part of an original rock comedy musical: Rak of Aegis." - WheninManila.com

PETA closes theater season with ‘Rak of Aegis’

The Manila Times
Original Article can be found HERE

THE music of the legendary pop-rock band Aegis conquers the local theater scene as the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) closes its 46th Theater Season with Rak of Aegis, a Pinoy rock comedy-musical featuring the songs of Aegis.
Opening on January 31 at the PETA Theater Center, Rak of Aegis will run for six weeks, Fridays to Sundays until March 9.

The highly anticipated new musical will feature chart-topping songs of the 90s Pinoy rock band, like “Luha,” “Halik,” “Sundot,” “Christmas Bonus,” and “Basang-basa sa Ulan” performed by a mix of talented theater artists led by Isay Alvarez-Seña, Robert Seña, Aicelle Santos and Joan Bugcat.

Other cast members include Ro Alfonso, Jet Barrun, Kakai Bautista, Poppert Bernadas, Gimbey Dela Cruz, Neomi Gonzales, Pepe Herrera, Carlon Matobato, Julienne Mendoza, John Moran, Jerald Napoles, Gie Onida, Phillip Palmos, Myke Salomon, Paeng Sudayan, and Gold Villar.

A story of love, fame and resilience, the narrative revolves around the residents of the flooded  village of Villa Venizia. At the center of the story is Aileen (Aicelle Santos alternating with Joan Bugcat) a young mall promodizer caught in the web of finding love and seeking fame to support her family.

Aileen’s family like the other residents are greatly affected by the flood. Her father Kiel is in the brink of losing his job as baranggay captain Mary Jane (Isay Alvarez-Seña) plans to close her failing shoe factory. Knowing that her income will never be enough to make ends meet, Aileen decides to make a video of herself in the hopes of becoming the next YouTube sensation. Aileen’s suitor Tolits (Jerald Napoles alternating with Pepe Herrera) posts the video online, unaware that it will put Villa Venizia under the spotlight and change their lives forever.

Rak of Aegis is a musical filled with visual spectacle showcasing the Pinoy’s natural love for music and innate resilience in the face of calamity. The musical is created by the same women behind PETA’s hit comedy musical Care Divas, PETA Artistic Director Maribel Legarda and Palanca Award-winning writer Liza Magtoto, with musical arrangement and musical direction by actor-musician Myke Salomon.

The musical also consists of a talented artistic team, which includes Gio Gahol (choreography), Jonjon Villareal (lighting design), Mio Infante (production design), Carlo Pagunaling (costume design), Maco Custodio (shoe design), and Joan Pamintuan (accessory design).
